After the recent severe winds we had some roof damage that Firewheel took care of. They were fast, responsive, helpful, and very reasonably priced. We're happy with the work, and would definitely recommend them.
Roofing for Lucas custom homes on one- and two-acre lots near Lavon Lake. Steep, many-faceted roofs, open-country wind exposure and hail damage call for careful work, and we handle inspections, insurance claims and replacements.
Lucas is a small city with big lots. Its residential zoning districts set minimum lot sizes of one, one and a half or two acres, and the city has grown slowly, from about 540 residents in 1970 to around 7,600 in 2020. The result is a housing stock made up mostly of custom and semi-custom homes, many with large footprints, several roof planes, dormers and long ridgelines. Lucas zoning also requires principal dwellings to have a roof pitch of at least 6:12 unless the design review committee approves an alternative, so steep roofs are the rule here. Homes range from older acreage properties to newer estates in subdivisions such as Brockdale Estates and Lakeview Downs.
Open pasture and wide lots mean Lucas homes have little to slow the wind, and the city borders Lavon Lake to the east, where storms can cross open water and fields before reaching rooftops. Spring hail moves through Collin County every year, and a large, steep roof presents a lot of surface to it. Steep slopes also shed water fast but put more stress on ridge caps, hip shingles and high-wall flashing in a gust. Where homes sit among mature trees along creeks and older lots, limbs and leaf buildup become the problem. Typical Lucas failures include wind-lifted shingles on ridges and hips, hail bruising and leaks at dormers and chimneys.
Lucas requires every contractor to register with the city before plans can be submitted, which includes uploading trade licenses and proof of commercial general liability insurance naming the city. The city's permit pages do not spell out a separate re-roof permit, so check with the city's building inspection office; we pull the permit when one is required. For solar, Lucas says a city permit is only required if a third-party inspector is not used. Some Lucas subdivisions have HOAs or recorded deed restrictions that govern exterior materials and colors, and a change in roof design or pitch may need review against the zoning standards, so confirm before switching materials.

Open acreage and nearby Lavon Lake leave homes exposed to wind, and large roof areas catch more hail in spring storms.
