Class 4 Impact-Resistant Shingles in Texas: Are They Worth It?

By Firewheel Roofing · Published 2026-09-22 · DFW Roofing

North Texas sees more hail than almost anywhere in the country, so it is no surprise that impact-resistant shingles come up in nearly every DFW roof replacement conversation. Class 4 shingles can cost more up front, may lower your insurance premium, and can hold up better in a hailstorm. Whether they are worth it depends on your insurer, your policy, and how long you plan to stay in the house.

What "Class 4" actually means

Class 4 is the highest rating under UL 2218, the impact-resistance standard most shingle manufacturers test against. In the test, steel balls are dropped onto roofing samples from set heights:

To pass, the material must take two hits in the same spot without cracking on the top or underside. The test checks for functional damage, meaning cracks or splits that could let water in, not for scuffs or marks. Some products are instead rated under FM 4473, which fires ice balls to simulate hail and also uses a Class 1 to 4 scale. You can learn more about the standard from UL.

Class 4 does not mean hail-proof. Very large hail can still damage these roofs, and manufacturers generally do not warrant hail performance. GAF, for example, states that hail damage is not covered under its limited shingle warranty.

How Texas insurance discounts work

Texas has encouraged impact-resistant roofing for decades. In 1998, a Texas Commissioner's Bulletin required premium credits for roofs that meet UL 2218. Today, TDI says the amount of the discount for each class of roofing material is set by each insurance company, so it varies widely from carrier to carrier. Class 4 roofs earn the highest credit when a company offers one.

In September 2026, TDI issued a bulletin urging home insurers to offer "meaningful" discounts for storm-resistant upgrades, including impact-resistant roofing and roofs built to the IBHS FORTIFIED standard. It is a recommendation, not a mandate, and any discount still has to be actuarially supported. With Texas premiums up sharply over the last several years, it is worth asking your agent what your company offers right now.

To qualify, the shingles usually must carry proper labeling. TDI lists the UL label (or a label from another TDI-approved lab), the impact class, the manufacturer, the year made and the brand name. Materials without the required labels do not qualify, even if they meet the standard. The Texas Windstorm Insurance Association requires TDI form PC068, the Impact-Resistant Roofing Installation Form, and other insurers may use their own forms. Ask your agent which paperwork they need before work starts.

Before you buy: call your agent and ask three questions. Does my company offer a Class 4 credit? How much is it on my current premium? What documentation do you need from the installer?

The catch: cosmetic damage exclusions

The 1998 Texas rules that created impact-resistant roof credits also created an optional cosmetic damage endorsement. It excludes hail damage that affects only appearance while keeping coverage for damage that lets water in or affects the roof's structure. Many carriers now use similar language, sometimes as a condition of the Class 4 discount.

That trade-off is not always bad. A Class 4 roof is more likely to come through a moderate storm with no functional damage at all. But if your policy excludes cosmetic damage, do not expect a full replacement just because hail left marks. Read your policy, and see our insurance claims page for how hail claims are handled.

What Class 4 costs compared with standard shingles

Class 4 shingles cost more than standard architectural shingles. Industry sources commonly put the upfront premium in the range of 15 to 20 percent, though the gap depends on the product line, the size and pitch of your roof, and current material pricing. For reference, an architectural shingle replacement on an average DFW home runs $8,000 to $15,000.

The best way to compare is a side-by-side quote on the same roof. Ask any contractor you are considering, including us, to price a standard architectural shingle and a Class 4 shingle with the same underlayment, flashing and ventilation, so you are comparing only the shingle. Our roof cost calculator can give you a starting range.

Then do the payback math. Say your annual premium is $3,500 and your insurer offers a 10 percent credit for a Class 4 roof. That is $350 a year, or $3,500 over ten years, before counting any reduced risk of paying a large wind and hail deductible. If your insurer offers little or no credit, the case rests mostly on durability.

Class 4 products you will see in DFW

Most major manufacturers now sell Class 4 asphalt shingles that look like standard architectural shingles. Common examples include:

SBS ("rubberized") shingles stay more flexible, which helps them absorb impacts and handle temperature swings. Some metal roofing systems also carry Class 4 ratings, though dents on metal are often treated as cosmetic by insurers. Compare options on our roof types page, and always confirm the exact product and its rating on the label.

When Class 4 is worth it in DFW

Class 4 shingles tend to make the most sense when:

They make less sense if you are selling soon, your insurer gives no credit, or your budget is tight and a quality standard architectural shingle with good installation will serve you well. Financing can help spread out the cost if Class 4 is the better long-term choice.

Installation matters: a Class 4 rating applies to the shingle itself. Proper nailing, underlayment, flashing and ventilation still determine how well the whole roof performs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Class 4 shingles hail-proof?

No. Class 4 means the shingle passed the UL 2218 test, where a 2-inch steel ball is dropped from 20 feet twice in the same spot without cracking. That is a strong rating, but very large hail can still damage these roofs, and manufacturers generally do not warrant hail performance.

How much of an insurance discount will I get in Texas?

It depends on your company. TDI says each insurer sets its own discount for impact-resistant roofing, and Class 4 earns the highest credit when one is offered. A September 2026 TDI bulletin urged insurers to offer meaningful discounts but did not set an amount. Ask your agent for the number on your current premium.

What paperwork do I need for the discount?

Insurers typically want proof of the product and its rating. TDI requires proper labeling showing the UL or approved lab label, impact class, manufacturer, year made and brand. TWIA requires TDI form PC068, and other insurers may use their own forms. Confirm requirements with your agent before installation.

Do Class 4 shingles look different from regular shingles?

Not usually. Most Class 4 asphalt shingles sold today look like standard architectural shingles and come in similar colors. Products such as GAF Timberline AS II, Owens Corning Duration FLEX and CertainTeed Landmark ClimateFlex are designed to match the look of their standard lines.
